1968/1970 Imports to Serenity Arabian Farms Quarantine Station by Hansi Heck-Melnyk
Here is the list of the Arabian horses that were imported to the Serenity Arabian Farms quarantine on March 3, 1970. They arrived in two charter planes. On board were Mr & Mrs Doug Marshall, Jim Kline, Tom and Rhita McNair, and Dr Marsafi. The temperature in Canada on the day they arrived was below zero; in Cairo, it had been something like 90 degrees when they left. Inspection of all imports 1968/1970 was done by General Wayne Kester (Sedge) on behalf of the AHRA for registration. D & B Marshall / Gleannloch Farms - TX USA Ibn Hafiza (1959) (Sameh x Hafiza) B St. Zaghloul (Insh) (1963) (Gassir x Gharbavia) Yasser II (Gassir II) (1970) (Hassan x Bint Bint ElSamraa) Lamia (1958) (Nazeer x Lateefa) Hayam (1959) (Mashhour x Tahia) Bint Shaams (1956) (El Sereei x Shams) Naadya (Nadia) (1969) (Ramses Fayek x Tifla) Cleopatra (1960) (Anter x Ahlam II). Cleopatra foaled Pegasus on 3/5/70 while in quarantine. Bint Bint El Samraa (1959) (Sid Abouhom x Bint El Samraa) this mare had at her side Yasser II by Hassan (foaled on 1/5/1970), and was in foal to Hassan which produced Ibn Al Hassan born on 12/5/1970.
Soheir II (Souhair II) (1963) (Fagir x Tifla) Note: This mare had pyroplasmosis and was ordered to be destroyed, but Serenity pleaded for her life and she stayed for almost two years in Serenity's quarantine. She foaled Bint Soheir II by Gubran on 8/31/1970 in quarantine. Soheir II was bred to Khofo in 1972 and produced Taarik. For our efforts, Doug Marshall gave us Soheir II as a gift, which we refused, unwilling to accept such an expensive, superb mare for our small efforts. We had to build a separate arena for Soheir II to be contained in because of her quarantine status.

James Dowd - Decatur, Ill USA Adhem (1967) (Alaa El Din x Zobeya) A number of the above horses had "Piroplasmosis" and I like to make it explicitly clear that NONE HAD THIS DISEASE COMING FROM THE EAO OR EAO POLICE COLLEGE. Some of these horses stayed more than 6 months with Serenity, another one for two years. Each one was worked daily by me in a special quarantined area of the farm. Six test ponies, which were given blood twice each week from the imported horses were, on Government instructions, destroyed even though no piroplasmosis could be found. After the 1968 importation and the establishment of the Pyramid Society, I established a list for Mr. Marshall containing each and every SE horse in Egypt, and induced him to once more go back to Egypt and bring out all we could. Mr. Marshal was surprised when he saw the list, and elated that now some of these horses could be located and possibly purchased, if of excellent quality. With the help of Judi and Don Forbis, Tom and Rhita McNair, Jim Kline, Martin Loeber, Jim Dowd, and the great assistance of Dr Marsafi, these horses were selected. Mr. Marshall's remark was "we scraped the barrel." It is these people who so unselfishly contributed to the Straight Egyptian Industry. Only Doug and Margaret Marshall were permitted to acquire stock from the EAO due to his multimillion-dollar contributions to Egypt, which included the Serenity and Ansata importations. All other horses, although some were bred by the EAO, came from private breeders who acquired them from auction sales the EAO held and other original, recognized breeding farms. Early in 1970, the war was still going on in Egypt, and our pilots had the "be quiet" order until they passed the Suez Canal. Prior to this, a plane we chartered was sabotaged in Amsterdam and I had to plead with an importer to loan us his charter for thousands of extra dollars, to get these horses out. The Russians loaned us loading equipment from Alexandria, as none was available in Cairo. It was a cloak-and-dagger operation, and the people mentioned actually risked their lives to get the horses out. Let us never forget this and give credit where it is due. It was only because of excellent rapport developed between Serenity Farms and the Canadian Government that such importations were permitted, the first one in the history of Canada. Canada needs to be saluted for this.
