Lucky If wishes were horses, Ya'Allah would still live in my pasture and not just in my heart.
Ya'Allah came as a stow-away when I bought his mother, Dahloura. He came into the world between bites when his mother paused eating long enough to walk to the corner of her stall and deposit him there without bothering to lie down then return to her breakfast. Mom couldn't figure out how to grow taller to help this long-legged boy nurse and he couldn't figure out how to find the faucet under there, so he had his colostrum cocktail via an IV. Got a bit touchy with some joint ill, but they finally came home and he was tearing around his pasture in uncontrolled rapture in no time. It was his unbridled exuberance and love of running full out that led to the accident which resulted in a splayed fall and torn ligaments. Even then, with no hope of a performance career, he should have been a great breeding stallion. But 2-yr-olds love to run and play and Ya'Allah must have taken another fall, because he was suddenly much worse. As it turned out, he had broken his pelvis, so on a cold Friday morning, his vet ended his pain -- and mine began.
I will always believe in Ya'Allah's potential for greatness and grieve for his lost chance to prove himself. But I will always know; and he will always remain the stallion that was The Champion . . . to me.
